Blue-Green Abalone Shell

14.00

Natural Abalone Shell (Haliotis) to assist in your smudge cleansing rituals, or to be a secure and sacred place for your jewelry and treasures.

Native Americans have long lived along the California coast, where the first settlement started over 13,000 years ago near Santa Barbara by the Chumash Indians. The name Chumash means “seashell people” being that they originated near the coast and benefited most by having the most resource abundant varieties of marine and terrestrial habitats, on the planet.

The Chumash, who lived in harmony with nature,  harvested the abalone for its sweet and nutritious meat, and for the beautiful shells that were used as bowls, money, and jewelry.  Abalone shell was also carved into sturdy fish hooks, using the natural inner curve of the shell, the Chumash hooks were crafted to be strong and sharp.  They mirrored the colors of the sea and sky.

Size: varies between 5-6" in length. Because this is a natural material, color and shape will vary.
